No More Harems: The Hidden History of Muslim and Ex-Muslim Feminism

No More Harems: The Hidden History of Muslim and Ex-Muslim Feminism: The battle for women's rights is central to the battle for Europe and for western values.

“It’s not a question of Islam or Christianity, East or West, democracy, justice or freedom,” my father always told me. “It is a question of power. It is a question of modern day colonialism of countries for money and natural resources and the corruption of the Muslim government betraying their people,” Asra Quratulain Nomani, Standing Alone in Mecca, page 44.

Phyllis Chesler | Pajamas Media | October 4, 2011

I love Muslim and ex-Muslim feminist women. They are so earthy, womanly, passionate, knowledgeable, beautiful, and eloquent — so emotionally present, so incredibly brave. Smitten? I guess I am, I always have been — ever since I began moving in Muslim circles 50 years ago.

Take Tunisia's minister for women's affairs. Amidst the mayhem and madness, Lilia Labidi just up and walked out of the United Nations meeting. Unlike Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was "waxing enthusiastic about the success of the Arab uprisings," Labidi's "giddy exposure to the UN rapidly dissipated. Her own appeal to the gathering (of powerful women presidents and secretary of states) for help in consolidating gains for women in Tunisia elicited little reaction."

And so, Labidi decided to go home. She said: "I cannot live here in such luxury," and she noted that her $700.00 a day cost of staying in New York "would be better spent on a project for rural women." Labidi was offended, frustrated, that the entire UN seemed to care only about the "Israeli-Palestinian conflict" and had absolutely no interest in the needs of women, neither in Tunisia nor anywhere else.

Foreign Policy: Why Do They Hate Us? The real war against women is in the Middle East

Why Do They Hate Us? The real war on women is in the Middle East.

Mona Eltahawy | Foreign Policy Magazine | May/June 2012

SO WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

First we stop pretending. Call out the hate for what it is. Resist cultural relativism and know that even in countries undergoing revolutions and uprisings, women will remain the cheapest bargaining chips. You -- the outside world -- will be told that it's our "culture" and "religion" to do X, Y, or Z to women. Understand that whoever deemed it as such was never a woman. The Arab uprisings may have been sparked by an Arab man -- Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire in desperation -- but they will be finished by Arab women.

Amina Filali -- the 16-year-old Moroccan girl who drank poison after she was forced to marry, and beaten by, her rapist -- is our Bouazizi. Salwa el-Husseini, the first Egyptian woman to speak out against the "virginity tests"; Samira Ibrahim, the first one to sue; and Rasha Abdel Rahman, who testified alongside her -- they are our Bouazizis. We must not wait for them to die to become so. Manal al-Sharif, who spent nine days in jail for breaking her country's ban on women driving, is Saudi Arabia's Bouazizi. She is a one-woman revolutionary force who pushes against an ocean of misogyny.

Ansar al-Sunna Calling for a Sharia State in Grønland, Oslo — And a 9-11 for Norway

Ansar al-Sunna Calling for a Sharia State in Grønland — And a 9-11 for Norway

Gates of Vienna, Vlad Tepes & Libertarian Republican | 18 August 2012

The following article concerns Islamic radicals in the Grønland district of Oslo. To refresh your memory, here’s what Fjordman had to say about Grønland:

Grønland is only two subway stops from the Parliament, and one from the Central Station, fairly close to the government offices that were bombed by Breivik.

It looks like Karachi, Basra, and Mogadishu all rolled into one. People sell drugs openly just next to the Grønland subway station.

It’s not Norway or Europe anymore, except when there is welfare money to be collected. The police have largely given up. Early in 2010 Aftenposten stated that there are sharia patrols in this area, and gay couples are assaulted and chased away. “Immigrant Fatima Tetouani says that ‘Grønland is more Muslim than Morocco.’

A radical group has now demanded a separate Islamic state in Grønland, threatened specific political leaders, and promised “a new July 22 or September 11 on Norwegian soil”.
